PVC priming fluid prepares the contact surfaces of PVC pipe and fittings for solvent-welded joints in plumbing and irrigation systems. It is applied to the outside of the pipe end and the inside of the fitting socket, covering the areas that will meet when the joint is assembled.
The solvent action cleans and degreases the PVC, removes its glossy surface glaze and softens the material. This allows the solvent cement to penetrate the surface rather than sit over contamination or an untreated glaze.
Solvent cement then softens and dissolves the mating surfaces further. Once assembled, the pipe and fitting surfaces bond together as the joint cures. Priming is the surface-preparation step; the cement provides the joint-forming action.
Red primer leaves a coloured mark that makes the treated area visible. Clear primer performs the preparation without leaving a coloured primer mark.
All three primer containers include a brush. Iplex specifies wiping primer onto the joint surfaces with a clean, lint-free cloth; brushing alone does not remove grease and dirt.
Prime and cement one joint at a time. Follow the selected cement and pipe-system instructions for assembly, holding and curing before service.
